The ecology of tropical rain forest canopies.

چکیده
With the advent of increasingly sophisticated techniques for access, tropical forest canopy research has burgeoned in the last few years. Although an enormous amount of basic descriptive work remains to be done, canopy research is now entering a more advanced and ecological phase.

First direct landscape-scale measurement of tropical rain forest Leaf Area Index, a key driver of global primary productivity.
Leaf Area Index (leaf area per unit ground area, LAI) is a key driver of forest productivity but has never previously been measured directly at the landscape scale in tropical rain forest (TRF). We used a modular tower and stratified random sampling to harvest all foliage from forest floor to canopy top in 55 vertical transects (4.6 m(2)) across 500 ha of old growth in Costa Rica. Landscape LAI...
متن کاملConservation Ecology: GPS and GIS methods in an African rain forest: applications to tropical ecology and conservation
Since the completion of the Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS) in 1995, the integration of GPS and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology has expanded to a great number of ecological and conservation applications. In tropical rain forest ecology, however, the technology has remained relatively neglected, despite its great potential. Notwithstanding cost, this is principally due ...
متن کاملEvidence for a Cenozoic radiation of ferns in an angiosperm-dominated canopy.
In today's angiosperm-dominated terrestrial ecosystems, leptosporangiate ferns are truly exceptional--accounting for 80% of the approximately 11,000 nonflowering vascular plant species. Recent studies have shown that this remarkable diversity is mostly the result of a major leptosporangiate radiation beginning in the Cretaceous, following the rise of angiosperms. This pattern is suggestive of a...
متن کاملTree species control rates of free-living nitrogen fixation in a tropical rain forest.
Tropical rain forests represent some of the most diverse ecosystems on earth, yet mechanistic links between tree species identity and ecosystem function in these forests remains poorly understood. Here, using free-living nitrogen (N) fixation as a model, we explore the idea that interspecies variation in canopy nutrient concentrations may drive significant local-scale variation in biogeochemica...
متن کاملCommon ectomycorrhizal networks may maintain monodominance in a tropical rain forest.
Most tropical rain forests contain diverse arrays of tree species that form arbuscular mycorrhizae. In contrast, the less common monodominant rain forests, in which one tree species comprises more than 50% of the canopy, frequently contain ectomycorrhizal (ECM) associates. In this study, I explored the potential for common ECM networks, created by aggregations of ECM trees, to enhance seedling ...
